Fiona Figg and Kitty Lane Mysteries
Book description courtesy of Goodreads
1918 Italy
When a deadly blizzard traps Fiona Figg and Kitty Lane in the Dolomite Mountains, it's all downhill from here.
Their hotel is snowed-in, and no one can get in or out. Then a man is found dead in his locked hotel room - and the killer is still on the premises. But with no murder weapon and too many suspects, their investigation is treading on thin ice.
The colder it gets outside, the hotter it gets inside as Fiona squares off with both her beloved Archie and her nemesis Fredricks. With her love-life on a slippery-slope, Fiona risks everything in one bold move...
As fast and twisty as a downhill slalom, this slick new cozy from Kelly Oliver will have you melting into a puddle of laughter.
Snap in and enjoy the ride.
My Thoughts
The covers for these books are absolutely gorgeous. If nothing else, I started reading them for that reason alone. I still find this funny.....that a pretty cover can draw me in. I am a history buff and love serious political conversations all day. So to find as a grown adult that cozy mysteries and pretty artwork can make me drop everything and read it is funny to me. But here we are, lol!
While this is listed as Fiona Figg and Kitty Lane Book 3 it is actually Book 6 for me in the series because the first three books are just with Fiona Figg as the main character. I do like the addition of Kitty, who seems to be a shrinking violet on the surface yet underneath is a trained operative well able to fend for herself. The relationship between the two women is amusing as a side plot because Kitty and Fiona are not that far apart in age yet Kitty is always pretending to be so much younger and it grates on Fiona's nerves. So I like the added bonus...plus Kitty's dog seems very cute!
In this latest chapter, Fiona and Kitty are once again plagued by the scoundrel, Fredricks, who seems to turn up everywhere they are. Is he a villain? Or is he a good guy disguised as a villain? Who really knows but this time in Italy, they are snowed in and looking again for a cold blooded killer. Fiona's real love interest Archie is also somewhat of an enigma and she is often frustrated at her inability to grasp the movements of both the men in her life.
Trapped in a hotel during a blizzard in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, the girls are baffled by a locked room murder with no weapon or suspects. The cast of characters surrounding them are little help and even include Benito Mussolini. Everyone is suspect and a second murder occurs. In between, they must deal with injured soldiers and the seriousness of the war raging around them and too close for comfort.
I loved the descriptions of the mountains, Fiona trying to walk in skis, and just the general musings of her mind about the mind numbing war and its casulties. Having lost her own husband to it in book one she knows a thing or two about feeling helpless trying to care for the disheartened men.
Oliver does a great job again of weaving humor into serious situations. In this part of the series we really see a shift of Fiona being pursued by both Archie and Fredricks and start to wonder if maybe even Fiona is questioning her loyalties to both men. I'm guessing this will continue in the following books.
A cute cozy read that makes you want to keep finding out what everyone is up to!
